Objective(s): To collect data on the thickness and rate of accumulation of marine sediments in breached lakes; to measure ground temperatures and depth to ice-bonded sediments; to acquire information about the distribution of ice-bonding in the coastal zone (both onshore and offshore) to measure sub-ice currents along the edge of the bottomfast ice; to locate pressure ridges or other dynamic ice features which may be interacting with the seafloor in the coastal zone seaward of the bottomfast ice;
Project Description: The Researcher and his team will use a hand-operated auger to take sediment cores and temperature measurements. Cores will penetrate the seabed beneath the ice to a depth of 2-3 metres. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) will be used to investigate ground ice distribution and a current meter will be used to measure sub-ice currents along the edge of the bottom-fast ice.
