Objective(s): To model the influence of discharge from the Mackenzie River on the distribution of sea ice especially during break-up and freeze-up periods; to investigate the influence of the postulated climatic warming on the distribution of sea ice as a function of variations in the Mackenzie River discharge that may be modified by a climatic warming.
Project Description: Satellite imagery, hydrologic data and field measurements will be used to develop a computer model of the thawing of sea ice and freezing of water in this area. The investigators will drill a hole through the ice and measure water temperature, salinity and turbidity.
