Objective(s): to give students direct experience with the characteristics of the Arctic environment in winter; to analyse the physical properties of snow (depth, density, water equivalent, strength and structure), drift genesis and Arctic Ocean ice properties; to monitor heat flow and the surface energy balance of snow packs
Project Description: Professor Howland will carry out a winter field course for students of the Northern Studies Program of Middlebury College in Vermont, U.S.A. Using the Research Centres in Igloolik and Iqaluit, students will study polar physical conditions of the Arctic environment in winter.
