Our objective is to study ice processes on the Hay River in order to facilitate our development of computer models to predict them. The hydraulic modeling techniques being employed also have the potential to address local issues such as the effects of berming and channel infilling on ice jam occurrence and severity. The researcher would ultimately like to be able to provide some flood warning tool...

199119901988 Summary:
Ice gauges are installed on river ice once the ice is strong enough to support researchers (20 gauges for the Mackenzie Delta and 15 gauges for Hay River). These gauges are read every 10 days to obtain total ice thickness, white ice thickness and snow depth. From these data, the rates of ice growth and decay can be calculated, and the approximate date of maximum ice thickness can be determined....
