Objectif(s): To clarify how Muslims who live around the Arctic Circle make sense of Islam.
Description du projet: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No. 5694. The main objective of this research project is to clarify how Muslims who live around the Arctic Circle make sense of Islam. In the Arctic Circle, Muslim religious traditions seem more challenged than elsewhere. For example, because of the extreme light conditions. Thus, the research team would like to explore: 1) how do Muslims in the Arctic live their lives, both as individuals and as a community? 2) From which authorities do they seek advice for practical, religious, and juridical matters? 3) What are their ideas of community, home and belonging? 4) How do they relate to their new neighbours and environment? This research project belongs to a bigger research project which also explores this topic in Norway. The PI hopes to contribute with a new perspective to the academic debate on Muslim subjectivity formation today. The PI also wishes to offer new insights to newcomer/Indigenous relations in Canada. The PI will engage in participant observation and interview community members. Participant observation means that the PI will participate and volunteer in various public events and events that the PI is allowed to participate in, such as women's circles, and social activities for the community. Interviews take approximately 2-3 hours. A collection of questions is prepared, but interviewees do not need to cover all of them. The interviews will be semi-structured. This means there will be focus on the flow of the interview and on the participant's interests rather than going through the questions one by one. Interview questions concern buying, travelling, praying, eating, celebrating holidays, and moments of struggle and comfort. There are also life story interviews. They focus on the participant's life course and experience. The PI is waiting for their response and feedback. Throughout the process, the team is planning to stay in touch with stakeholders via e-mail and would like to meet personally or have a phone call once there. The PI also plans to share results of the research with stakeholders in their preferred form. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from: November 01 - December 31, 2023
