Description du projet: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No. 5593. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the Yellowknife family medicine (YK-FM) residency site – Canada’s first circumpolar family medicine (FM) residency training site – on physician workforce and patient care delivered to the people in the NWT, and the community more broadly. The objectives of this study are to longitudinally assess the impact of the YK-FM residency site on: 1) supply of northern practice-ready family physicians; 2) vacancy and retention rates for family physicians; 3) patient access to primary care health services; and 4) medical community satisfaction (including the culture of medical education and practice). This longitudinal study will encompass: 1) questionnaire surveys; 2) interviews; 3) review of available physician workforce and health services access data; and 4) exploration of the Indigenous community perspectives and outcomes. An interim (after 2024) and final report will be provided to the Territorial Medical Director. The research team intends to share this information with the academic medicine community and rural family medicine community through presenting at local, national and international conferences. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from: June 01 - December 31, 2026
