Objectif(s): To study select bedrock exposures of sedimentary rocks and determine their age and provenance (source).
Description du projet: To study select bedrock exposures of sedimentary rocks and determine their age and provenance (source). This is completed by walking and looking/documenting rocks (mapping) and in some places collecting fist-sized rocks samples with a small hammer. These samples are processed at the University of Alberta. To test the hypothesis, a combination of field observations by detailed mapping of bedrock, and collecting hand sample size pieces of selected rock units will then be analyzed in a laboratory to determine the age of the rock and its source. The project is designed for graduate level research at the University of Alberta. Field work in 2014 is reconnaissance in nature, with a budget that can only afford the researchers involved. Future years of the project can involve community outreach programs that integrate findings with traditional knowledge and if budgets afford a small community oriented field trip to some of the investigated sites. The ongoing study will be featured as talks and posters at the Annual NWT Geoscience Forum in Yellowknife, held in November, during the length of the project. Results and project progress will be communicated through the NWT Geoscience Office's Outreach Geologist to local communities. Community visit to report results can be arranged during the course of the project, at the request of the community. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 10, 2014 to August 31, 2014.
