Objectif(s): To produce permafrost disturbance susceptibility maps for the region surrounding Sachs Harbour identifying areas with low, moderate and high susceptibility to future permafrost disturbance.
Description du projet: The goal is to produce permafrost disturbance susceptibility maps for the region surrounding Sachs Harbour identifying areas with low, moderate and high susceptibility to future permafrost disturbance. A 25 km radius around Sachs Harbour will be systematically mapped to identify and map permafrost disturbances. GPS will be used to map the perimeter of identified permafrost disturbances. Soil samples (500g) will be collected to characterize the soils properties and water samples (1 L) will be collected from streams and lakes to look at water quality. All processing of water samples will be completed in town. Research will be completed within a radius of Sachs Harbour and will incorporate community based knowledge on locations of permafrost disturbance. The researcher will be staying in town and plans on renting an ATV to access the land. Additionally, local guides will be hired to assist the researcher. Upon completion of the field season a public presentation will be made to the community presenting preliminary results of the mapping. Additionally, final results will be shared with the community as a written report. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 20, 2014 to August 10, 2014.
