Objectif(s): To understand the characteristics of the river during breakup to see if hydrokinetic energy may be an option.

Description du projet: The research team are seeking to understand the characteristics of the river during breakup to see if hydrokinetic energy may be an option. The research team will be placing a sonar device on the bottom of the Mackenzie River to collect data on the ice. The sonar device will be retrieved after approximately one month’s time. The research team are seeking to understand the characteristics of the ice breakup on the Mackenzie River near Norman Wells. Clearly, traditional knowledge will be required to identify location(s) for a monitoring device. Therefore, we see opportunities for members of the Sahtu Dene (partners in this project) to work alongside the research team. The research team will be sharing the data with the Sahtu Dene partners The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from May 7, 2014 to June 30, 2014.
