Objectif(s): The objective of this field work is to better understand the movement behaviour of the landslides in the region.

Description du projet: The objective of this field work is to better understand the movement behaviour of the landslides in the region. The Geological Survey of Canada’s research group lead by Dr. Baolin Wang has been conducting landslide research in the region since 2004. This is the final year of the project. The previous permits have expired. However, there is a need to make a follow up trip to the various landslide sites that were monitored before. The purpose of the trip is to make a quick measurement of those landslides and record how much they have moved this year. This record will enrich the previous data collected before. The researchers expect to make a trip in early September 2009 before the ground is covered by snow and when the landslides have moved to their maximum extent for this year. They don’t expect a second trip, although a brief follow up trip can become necessary after the first trip. Tape measures and a laser ranger will be used to measure the landslide size and movements. The research results will be reported back to the communities by providing an annual research summary and copies of scientific papers published. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted between August 24 and December 31, 2009, on various active landslide sites around Travaillant Lake (about 100 to 140 km southeast of Inuvik) and north of Inuvik along an approximate linear stretch from Noel Lake to near the Beaufort Sea.
