Description du projet: This licence is issued for scientific research application #198. The objective of this research is to investigate how non-aboriginal residents of the NWT acquire northern identities and how it impacts their participation in resource development consultations or decisions. This will include exploring how they personally identify as a ‘northerner’ and how they classify or categorize others as ‘northerners’ (or not). This research will be done through unstructured interviews with approximately six non-aboriginal residents of Inuvik. Individuals will be chosen based on recommendations given by initial and subsequent interviewees. All of the interviews will be conducted in a suitable location amenable to the respondent and will be recorded using a digital recorder. The researchers will forward a copy of the report for NSTP to the Aurora Research Institute and the Town of Inuvik. They will also forward a copy of the report to respondents who are interested in seeing the final product of their interviews. Fieldwork will be conducted from July 24 to August 31, 2008 in Inuvik.
