Objectif(s): The main focus of this study is to gather information about the realities and issues surrounding pain and palliative care with seniors in Northern Canada. This information will then be analyzed in order to determine whether the guidelines developed by the Pain & Aging NET are applicable within a Northern and remote context.

Description du projet: The main focus of this study is to gather information about the realities and issues surrounding pain and palliative care with seniors in Northern Canada. This information will then be analyzed in order to determine whether the guidelines developed by the Pain & Aging NET are applicable within a Northern and remote context. These guidelines focus primarily upon pain assessment, pain treatment, effects of pain, and concerns specific to seniors with dementia at the end of life (Martin, Williams, Hadjistavropoulous, T., Hadjistavropoulos, H.D. & MacLean, 2005). Targeted participants will be health and social work practitioners, volunteers, and family members of previous palliative care patients from the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The intent of this research is to have these individuals describe their experiences in providing care to seniors who are palliative patients, or family members who were palliative. Focus groups will be conducted over a one week period in each of three communities - Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Iqualuit. During the same period of time, it may be deemed appropriate to conduct one-on-one interviews with individuals who are unable to participate in scheduled focus group sessions, or with those who would feel more comfortable in discussions outside of a group setting. The proposed site visits will be held during the month of October, 2007. The results of this study will be made available to all participants. Participants will be sent a copy of the summary statement of the project. They will also be offered a copy of the full paper when written. Fieldwork will be conducted from October 01 to November 30, 2007 in Yellowknife.
