Description du projet: The proposed project consists of two parts: interviews with elders and knowledgeable hunters about leaders of caribou and their role in directing the movements of the herd, and the completion of a questionnaire by hunters aimed at determining their evaluation of the current Dempster Highway hunting policies of the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Six to ten individuals will be interviewed on this topic in each of three Porcupine Caribou Herd-user communities – Dawson, Old Crow, and Fort McPherson. Interviews will be conducted with a hired local research associate. All those interviewed will receive an honorarium for their contributions. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed, with copies returned to respondents for their review. Interview data will be shared with and deposited at the Gwich’in Social and Cultural Institute. The second part of the study, involving the completion of a questionnaire by hunters, will follow after further consultation with the relevant Gwich’in communities. Copies of the final report of the project will be provided to all participating organizations, including the Gwich’in Social and Cultural Institute, for their review before it is distributed publicly. This study, including interviewing, consultations with interviewees, the processing of questionnaires and data analysis, will be conducted from July 4 to December 31, 2006. Interviews the Tetlit Gwich’in community will be carried out in July, 2006 within the municipal bounds of the Hamlet of Fort McPherson.
