Objectif(s): In 2003, the Yukon Government, Department of Environment, in collaboration with the Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee and the Wildlife Management Advisory Committee (North Slope), interviewed several Aklavik Inuvialuit to determine the status of some North Slope animals and birds. At a public meeting that presented the results of the interviews, one individual referred to marmots. This traditional/local knowledge study will allow harvesters and community residents to contribute important information about the possibility of marmots on the North Slope. The researchers will work with the Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee and local harvesters, to design interviews and interview participants to see if anyone identifies a marmot colony. If a possible marmot colony is identified, there will be discussions between Yukon Environment, Parks Canada, NatureServe Yukon (YTG and CWS), the Wildlife Management Advisory Committee (North Slope), and the Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee on next steps to further investigate the possible marmot colony. Aklavik Inuvialuit will be involved in any field inspection of possible marmot colony location(s) and will participate in preparation of the journal article to document the colony. The researchers would like to accommodate youth and observers in the interview process, and may be able to hire a local person to transcribe information from the interviews.
