Objectif(s): The objective of this project is to complete a mineral and energy resource assessment (MERA) for the Greater Nahanni Ecosystem. A MERA is a study that tries to estimate whether or not there are metals, gems, or oil/gas in an area, and is required by Federal Government policy for every new national park proposal in NWT and Nunavut. This MERA must be done since a proposal has been made to expand the existing Nahanni National Park Reserve. A MERA follows an established set of rules, is conducted by the Geological Survey of Canada, is publicly reviewed before finalization, and contributes unbiased, science-based information on non-renewable resource potential in areas proposed for national parks. This knowledge can be used with other information to help governments make informed and balanced land use decisions. Geochemical, geophysical and mineral deposit (geological) data must be collected in areas where there is limited data in order to do the assessment. The field work will be carried out by small teams of 2 to 6 people who will visit the known mineral deposits, map the rocks, and collect small hand samples for lab analysis. They will also collect samples of stream and river sands and muds as well as water spring samples for chemical analysis. Further, an airborne survey will be conducted to map the area.
