Objectif(s): This research project is part of a large-scale study which takes place over three years, with an Aboriginal focus as one of four components. The purpose of this research is to explore the nature of co-operative enterprises in northern communities and how notions of membership, identity, community engagement and co-operative membership influence, and are influenced by, the unique characteristics and experiences of Inuit, First Nations and MÚtis cultures. The research will examine the success and challenges of northern co-operatives and how these may be affected by cultural identities and community contexts. The meaning of co-operative membership will be explored and its relationship to creating social cohesion in a variety of geographic and cultural settings. This research hopes to help shape co-operative and government policy, as well as the future success of co-operatives in Aboriginal communities across Canada.
