Objectif(s): Aboriginal people make up half of the total NWT population but are underrepresented in segments of the voluntary sector. The NWT Literacy Council, the YWCA of Yellowknife, and the Native Women's Association of the NWT want to gain an understanding of Aboriginal volunteers and volunteerism, and increase the participation of Aboriginal volunteers in the NWT's voluntary sector. The research will involve developing a database and profile of the voluntary sector in the NWT including Aboriginal participation in it; an estimated 40 key informant interviews that discuss Aboriginal volunteerism, and practices and attributes that support Aboriginal volunteer participation and encourage greater relevancy and accountability of volunteerism to Aboriginal communities; two case studies of volunteer experiences/activities with lessons to share about improving Aboriginal volunteer participation and volunteerism, and the relevancy and accountability of volunteerism to the Aboriginal community; a final report with recommendations to increase the quality and quantity of Aboriginal participation and improve the accountability and relevancy of volunteerism in the NWT and in Aboriginal communities; and a storybook of Aboriginal volunteer role models.
