Objectif(s): Given the possibility of a sustained reduction of the ice cover of Arctic shelves in response to climate warming, the Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study (CASES), a major international effort under Canadian leadership, aims at understanding the biogeochemical and ecological consequences of sea ice variability on the Mackenzie Shelf and provide the knowledge needed to model the impacts of present and forecasted variations in Arctic ice cover. The main objective of the 2002 expedition is to sample the climatology, as well as the physics (temperature, salinity), chemistry (carbon, nutrients, contaminants) and biology (plankton and fish larvae) of seawater on the Mackenzie Sehlf and along the Arctic ice pack.
