Objectif(s): The rational for this project is to introduce Self-Empowered Community Teams (SECT) in the Inuvik Regional Health & Social Services Board in order to provide better services in Communities throughout the region. The primary purposes are to: 1) further develop a collaborative approach between Social Services and Healthcare programs; 2) to enhance the authority of community employees with emphasis on empowerment and leadership capability of people indigenous to the community; and 3) to reinforce the benefits of a team approach. The potential benefits of implementing a SECT model within communities include: collaborative approach, Service quality improvement, greater level of commitment, reduction in grievances, and improved quality of work life.

Description du projet: The research project will be carried out in four phases. Phase I will be a review of current literature regarding indicators of successful teams, stages of development in SECT and means by which organizations can support SECTs. Phase II will be to devise a questionnaire for participants to complete. The questionnaire will be given to groups of people and will rate present quality of work life. The groups will consist of approximately 10 people and will be IRH&SSB employees in communities within the region. Phase III will compare the number of grievances, absenteeism, tardiness and turnover for the first six months of the pilot to a six month periods prior to the start of the pilot. This should confirm success of SECT objectives or where further action is needed. Phase IV will consist of 1) the "quality of work life" questionnaire and will be repeated with all five groups and compared to initial results and 2) personal interviews will be held with key people in the organizations to ask their general observations and feelings about the impact of SECT on the organization, and identify possible barriers.
