Objectif(s): The objective of this work is to make physical measurements of the size, shape and distribution of earth hummocks in areas where the 1968 forest fire did not occur. We are developing a mathematical model which predicts hummock size and activity based on soil properties and environmental conditions. Because hummock activity appears to be very sensitive to environmental changes, our model, coupled with field measurements and available soil property data, may provide indications of global climate change. The measurements made in this study will aid in model validation and refinement.

Description du projet: The objective of this work is to make physical measurements of the size, shape and distribution of earth hummocks in areas where the 1968 forest fire did not occur. Access to the site can be provided by a short vehicle trip on the highway going North from Inuvik. The burned and non-burned areas are within hiking distance of the road. Measurements will be made using tape measures and rulers. A single hummock excavation will be accomplished using pick and shovel, and then backfilled. The research team of two personnel will make these measurements between July 1-4, possibly utilizing a mobile tent-camp during the limited time available. No samples will be taken or removed.
