Objectif(s): To examine the site characteristics of old marine dumpsites; to determine the presence/absence of contaminant gradients in the vicinity of these sites; to assess the potential impact of these waste materials on the local marine environment. This project is part of a larger Environmental Protection study that is examining the impact of historical ocean disposal practices.

Description du projet: Samples of sediment, water and different marine species such as fish, marine invertebrates (including sea urchins, clams and crabs), and microscopic organisms will be collected by divers from the underwater dumpsite in Cambridge Bay. These samples will be assessed for contaminants such as heavy metals and PCB's. The study is primarily being conducted to determine if the waste materials of the dumpsite have had an impact on the marine environment.
