Objectif(s): To gather data on the experiences of Inuit women during pregnancy and childbirth while living on the land; during the early years of living in settlements; once community life and the northern health care system were well established; To identify special skills and knowledge which Inuit elders who have experience with meidwifery possess; To gather data on the traditional role of the midwife during the various stages of pregnancy, labour, childbirth and immediately following the birth; To identify practices and beliefs common throughout the North; To identify regional variations in the approach to pregnancy and childbirth and the practice of traditional midwifery;
Description du projet: This project will conbine analysis of interview data, review of available literature and the personal accounts of the elders. The elders will be asked to verbally respond to a series of open questions aimed at gathering data to meet the objectives of the research of traditional Inuit practices related to pregnancy and childbirth.
