Objectif(s): to evaluate the biological importance of polynyas to the overwintering populations of marine mammals and polar bears by studying late winter/early spring distribution and abundance in and out of polynya areas; to describe the reproductive ecology including underwater vocalizations of walruses; to study distribution of seals, in relation to polynyas, sea ice conditions, patterns of freeze-up, distribution of ringed seal pupping areas, distribution of polar bears and proposed winter shipping lanes

Description du projet: Dr. Ian Stirling and his team will record underwater sounds of walruses and observe their behaviour.
