Objective(s): To reconstruct history of hummocky soil formation.
Project Description: “Drunken forest” is developed on earth hummocks on shallow permafrost layer near Inuvik, Canada. Black spruce forests are typically grown on the shoulder of mounds and tree rings record the history of soil movement. By reading tree rings, the Principal Investigator (PI) will reconstruct history of hummocky soil formation. The PI will collect tree core samples by making hole in wood of black spruce trees (20 trees). The PI will also survey permafrost-affected soil by digging soil pits (5 pits). This research is fundamental and can provide information of dynamics of permafrost and effects of climate change on permafrost soil. The PI will submit interim reports and papers to Aurora Research Institute. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from September 7, 2017 to September 30, 2017.
