Project Description: The objective of this project is to analyze three case studies regarding the role that utility companies have played in the removal of barriers towards the implementation of renewable energy projects in the North. The Principal Investigator will do a literature review online through the University of Saskatchewan databases and also conduct interviews of representatives of Arctic Energy Alliance, Northwest Territories Power Corporation and the Government of the Northwest Territories. Research will analyze two or three case studies of community renewable energy projects: solar PV in Lutsel K'e, biomass in Fort MacPherson and possibly the Diavik wind farm. The outcome is to analyze those projects, i.e. lessons-learned, barriers, community perception, etc. Interviews with individuals speaking on behalf of their organization will be required. The final report will be shared with all parties interviewed as well as results to the ARI library. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 31, 2016 to December 31, 2016.
