Project Description: The objectives of this research project are to; • Increase installed human capital • Improve personnel recruitment practices • Provide improved retention strategies • Better match shareholders expectations on cost effective, safe and reliable operations Individual interviews will be conducted with middle and senior managers, the Director of Human Resources, and Human Resource department staff of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) to determine the desired future state related to operational performance of NTPC, and their perceptions of the gaps faced by NTPC in achieving operational performance targets related to human resourcing. Other questions will ask how they perceive the importance of attracting, retaining and developing human capital towards meeting operational goals expected by stakeholders. Interviews are expected to last one hour. A survey will be held with representatives from each of the employee groups within scope (a minimum of 4 with 4 to 6 participants in each) to determine what influences their decision to join an organization and what factors are important for their retention with the organization. The survey is expected to take approximately 15 minutes. Subject matter experts from different Northern rural based organizations and Canadian companies will also be recruited for interviews. Criteria for selection and participation in the research will be limited only to their familiarity with Human Resources and operations within Northern rural environments. No other criteria for selection will be used. Interviews are expected to last up to 30 minutes. All participants will be recruited by telephone or email. Benefits to local community revolve around improved development of organizational human capital and improved retention of employees. Results of the study will be presented to NTPC through a final written report. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from October 23, 2013 to December 31, 2013.
