Project Description: This license has been issued for the scientific research application #957. The objectives of this study are to: 1) determine prevalence and identify risk factors of arthritis and other chronic conditions among First Nations in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Canada; 2) assess the impact of these conditions on health, well-being and access to health services; 3) enhance the capacity of the Council of Yukon First Nations and Dene Nation to analyze the RHS data specific to these conditions; 4) engage in activities related to knowledge translation and ensure results guide policy and program planning; 4) provide opportunities for graduate students to gain valuable research experience. The project involves the statistical analysis of secondary data from the First Nations Regional Longitudinal Health Survey (RHS) at the Arctic Health Research Network NT (AHRN NT). This is an existing dataset and the researcher has received the appropriate permission to use. No data collection will take place in the NWT. The results of the project will be provided to stakeholders through written reports, conference presentations and publications in academic journals. This project will benefit northern communities and governments in that it will enhance understanding of arthritis and other chronic conditions in northern populations. This will aid in the development of programs and policies directed to improve First Nations health. The project will also enhance capacity of the regional partners within the RHS (Dene Nation and Council of Yukon First Nations) to participate and provide direction for analysis of the RHS database. Partnerships with Council of Yukon First Nations and Dene Nation will ensure findings are disseminated in a way that is meaningful for First Nations communities. The data will be extracted from the First Nations Regional Longitudinal Health Survey (RHS) from January 01 to December 31, 2009.
