Project Description: The purpose of this research is to explore the nature of co-operative enterprises in northern communities. This research will employ both individual interviews, administered in-person or over the telephone, and group interviews. It is expected that in some cases the discussion might go outside the expected scope of the interview. The respondents will be allowed and encouraged to tell the stories they think are most important. Focus groups will also be used as both a one-time group interview technique and as a repeated exploration of participants’ changing understanding of a specific set of issues, over time. Presentations will be made upon request, and the researchers will also produce a number of publications. Funds have also been designated to provide translation of documents. Opportunities for feedback and comment on preliminary report documents will be provided to participants, and/or representatives whenever appropriate and possible. Some opportunity for employment is available through this research project, primarily through language translation work to assist researchers in conducting interviews. Research findings will also be published in written form that will require translation. The research may also have economic benefits for the community. The process encourages organizations to have input into the types of questions that are asked, with the intent that findings will provide information useful for the functioning of the co-operative. The study will be conducted at Deline from August 1st to December 31st, 2005.
