Objective(s): A large amount of the carbon stocks within Canada lie above the tree line in peatlands, tundra vegetation and soil. Very little research on carbon flux has been completed in Canada's north. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing is attempting to lead the way for future carbon studies by modeling carbon processes throughout the north. The objectives of the research are to become familiar with the vegetation and landforms of northern Canada, and to collect vegetation and biophysical data for ground truth of remote sensing and carbon modeling activities. The Dempster Highway provides a unique opportunity for the team to be exposed to 11 different arctic Ecoregions and collect digital images and biomass samples representative of much of the north. The results of the study will be added to a breadth of knowledge regarding carbon sinks and sources already collected for more southern regions of Canada and thus improve computer models by better representing the North American continent.
