Objective(s): To investigate the presence of Giardia lamblia as a parasite in marine mammals in the Canadian North. This information will help investigate the possibility that whales harvested by First Nation peoples may harbour the parasite and investigate the possibility that sewage discharged to marine environments is infecting marine mammals, based on gene probe analysis of recovered Giardia.
Project Description: Samples will be initially evaluated on a presence/absence basis and taken further if warranted. The gene probe analytical technique is new and will be employed for all positive samples. Results will be published in a report format which will be submitted to FJMC to FJMC and the HTC. A paper will also be produced for publication in a refereed Journal.
